Calda is Italian for warm.
It is also the name of a house we are building in Charlotte, North Carolina: a membership bathhouse in the old order, with a quiet room to work from, opening on 1 May 2027.

Why a bathhouse.
House No. 1
Charlotte
I spent years in the corporate world, and for most of them I wanted one thing I could not find in this city: a place where I could look after myself and provide for my family at the same time. Somewhere to get properly warm, properly cold, and then sit down and do the work. There was nothing like it here. Before that I spent ten years of hands-on involvement in a family spa and sauna studio in the Midwest, through to its sale, and I have carried that room with me since.
So I am building it. Not a spa, and not a gym. A bathhouse, the way the old cities kept them: communal, quiet, clean, and open six days a week to anyone willing to keep the rules of the house.
The first one hundred members will know they built it with me. Their rate says so, for as long as they stay.

Two thousand years of the same good idea.
Every great city has had one. The ritual barely changes. Only the city does.
- RomeThe thermae. Heat, cold, and the business of the city conducted between them.
- IstanbulThe hammam. Steam, stone, and an attendant who has seen it all before.
- HelsinkiThe public sauna. Silence, birch, and a lake that does not care who you are.
- KyotoThe sento and the onsen. Rinse first. Speak softly. Leave it cleaner than you found it.
- CharlotteCalda. Opening 1 May 2027. The house you are reading about.

A room, water, and heat.
The Calda mark is an arch with two waves of water and two curls of steam cut out of it. Room, water, heat: the three things a bathhouse has always been made of. It is pressed into the towels, etched on the door, and painted on the wall behind the desk, lit from behind in warm white.
