The house  ·  House No. 1, Charlotte

Six rooms, built in the old order.

Heat, cold, light, stillness. Three thousand to four thousand square feet of limewash and stone, arranged the way bathhouses have been arranged for two thousand years, and finished for the way Charlotte works now.

I  ·  Heat

The Saunas

Two dry rooms, cedar and reeded wood, held between 175 and 185 degrees. Ten to fifteen minutes on the top bench. Ambient sound only. The door closes softly and the light is hidden behind the bench, so the room reads as warmth rather than as a fixture.

II  ·  Vapor

The Steam Room

Microcement walls, a low continuous bench, air at 110 to 115 degrees and full of water. Slower than the sauna and easier on the way in. Most members begin the evening here.

III  ·  Cold

The Cold Room

Cold deluge showers at opening; two plunges held between 45 and 50 degrees follow in phase two. Step under, do not flinch. Two minutes is the standard and the first thirty seconds are the whole point. This is the room people talk about afterward.

IV  ·  Light

The Red Light Room

Full-body red light panels in a room with nothing else in it. Ten to twenty minutes, eyes closed, between rounds or at the end. Members book it in the house; day passes take it as it comes.

V  ·  Stillness

The Lounge

Boucle seating with no legs, limestone tables, a tall arched window. The one room in the house where a laptop is welcome. Strong Wi‑Fi. No dedicated desks, so no one is ever locked out of a seat. Members work here between rounds; non-members may buy a lounge day rate of $25.

VI  ·  After

The Tea Counter

Tea, tonics and coffee, poured at a travertine counter. Included for members, sold to day passes. No alcohol, by design: the house is for the morning after, not the night before.

The finish

Nothing that shines.

Hand-finished limewash on every wall. Concealed warm light in every room. Porcelain and stone in the wet zones, microcement in the steam room, sealed concrete in the dry. No chrome, no black hardware, no screens on the floor, and no visible fixture anywhere in the house.
